Head Constable Injured in Clash Between Kanwariyas in Meerut
Incident Overview
In Meerut's Daurala area, a head constable sustained injuries while attempting to mediate a dispute between two groups of Kanwariyas over a motorcycle collision on the Delhi-Dehradun National Highway. This incident occurred on August 4, and a video capturing the altercation has circulated on social media, showing individuals trying to pull two people from a police vehicle.
Details of the Incident
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Avinash Pandey dismissed claims that police personnel were assaulted. He explained that on the night of August 2-3, some devotees were seated in a lane reserved for Kanwariyas near a hotel when a motorcycle, returning from Haridwar with Ganga water, collided with one of the Kanwariyas, leading to a heated argument that escalated into violence. Police were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports.
Injuries and Legal Action
As the police were escorting Sonu and his companion into a vehicle, they were attacked by some Kanwariyas. Pandey clarified that the individuals seen being assaulted in the video are not police officers but rather Sonu and his friend. During the altercation, the head constable who intervened suffered injuries to his hand, shoulder, and abdomen. He is currently receiving medical treatment. The SSP noted that a case has been registered against Sonu based on a complaint from the sector police in charge, and his motorcycle has been confiscated. Legal proceedings are underway.
