Challenges Faced by Commuters in Tamulpur

Commuters wading through strong currents carrying two-wheelers and bicycles on their shoulders

Tamulpur, June 22: Residents traveling along the Kumarikata–Jalah road are facing significant challenges as the Pagladia River swells and an unfinished bridge leaves them without safe passage.

This road serves as a vital link between Baksa and Tamulpur districts, but the rising waters have severely hindered regular travel.

While a permanent bridge is being constructed, the project remains incomplete, forcing locals to navigate the dangerous waters using makeshift methods.

Commuters often find themselves wading through strong currents, carrying bicycles and relying on others to help transport their two-wheelers.

“Traveling has become extremely difficult. The bridge has been under construction for three to four years, and if work could be sped up, it would greatly assist the community. Many local businesses are also suffering due to this delay,” shared a local resident.

The situation worsens during the monsoon season, making daily commutes perilous for those living on both sides of the river.

Residents have voiced their frustrations over the ongoing delays in bridge construction and have called upon Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to prioritize the project and alleviate the hazardous conditions.

“We appeal to the Chief Minister to ensure the bridge is completed as soon as possible, as we are enduring severe hardships. Those assisting in transporting vehicles across the river charge between Rs 200 to Rs 300, but we appreciate their help as they risk their lives for others,” the local added.

Furthermore, residents claim that the agency responsible for the project has not provided any alternative solutions for public transport during high water levels, leading to considerable inconvenience and safety concerns.

The bridge under construction at Khoironi over the Pagladia River is viewed as a critical infrastructure project for the area. Locals are hopeful that its timely completion will facilitate safe and reliable connectivity between Baksa and Tamulpur districts.
