Congress MP Questions Commonwealth Games Hosting Decision

On Tuesday, Congress MP Deepender Hooda expressed concerns regarding the decision to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Gujarat, advocating for Haryana to be designated as a host or co-host state. In a post on X, Hooda questioned why medals are often won by Haryana athletes, yet the Games are awarded to Gujarat. He stated that he, along with fellow MPs Jai Prakash JP, Varun Mulana, Satpal Brahmchari, and Karmbir Baudh, staged a protest in the Parliament complex, urging that Haryana be considered for hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Investment in Sports Infrastructure Essential for Haryana

Later, in an interview with a news agency, Hooda emphasized the need for investment in sports infrastructure to benefit Haryana, expressing hope that India would excel in the 2030 Commonwealth Games. He welcomed the opportunity for India to host the Games and appealed to the government to select Haryana for this prestigious event. Over the past 15-20 years, Haryana has contributed to over 50% of India's medals in major competitions. If substantial funds are to be allocated for developing sports infrastructure in any region, it should be Haryana, as its athletes have proven their capabilities.

Call for Equal Treatment Among States

Hooda further stated that the central government should adhere to 'Raj Dharma', which implies equal treatment for all states. He accused the government of favoring Gujarat by bringing all major facilities and projects there, thereby neglecting other states. He asserted that India should aim to be the top country in the 2030 Commonwealth Games and suggested that Haryana should at least be considered for co-hosting if not hosting. He reiterated the importance of 'Raj Dharma', emphasizing that all states should be treated equally.

Context of the Statement

Hooda's remarks came shortly after India officially secured the rights to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad set to host the centenary edition of this multi-sport event. The closing ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games took place in Glasgow on August 2, where Scotland formally handed over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, marking the country's upcoming role in this historic event.
