Incident Overview
Authorities in Palwal, Haryana, have initiated legal proceedings against ten family members for allegedly torturing and unlawfully detaining a 12-year-old Dalit boy, who was accused of theft, as reported by a local news outlet.
The troubling event occurred on the night of December 10.
So far, one individual has been apprehended, while three main suspects remain at large, according to reports.
The family faces charges of causing bodily harm and wrongful confinement. They are also being prosecuted under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Prevention of Atrocities Act, as well as the Juvenile Justice Care and Protection of Children Act.
According to police statements, the family allegedly restrained the boy and subjected him to electric shocks. The minor has also disclosed instances of sexual abuse by the family members. He is currently receiving medical treatment for burn injuries.
To support his family financially, the boy participates in wedding processions by carrying lights.
On the night of the incident, he was returning to Banchari village from Hodal town with two other children when they were pursued by a car carrying allegedly intoxicated individuals around 11:30 PM.
In an attempt to evade capture, the boy jumped into a nearby property while the other children fled towards the village.
The family residing in that house apprehended him, suspecting him of theft, and proceeded to assault him before contacting the police hours later.
The three main suspects, who are currently evading arrest, submitted anticipatory bail applications on Monday. A session court hearing scheduled for Wednesday was postponed after a medical report detailing the boy's injuries was presented. The next hearing is set for January 8.
