Haryana Government Relieves DGP Shatrujeet Kapur Amid Controversy
Haryana DGP Relieved of Duties
On Sunday evening, the Haryana government officially relieved Shatrujeet Kapur from his role as Director General of Police. This decision follows his mention in a suicide note left by Indian Police Service officer Y Puran Kumar, as reported by a local news source.
Puran Kumar was discovered deceased on October 7, having allegedly taken his own life by shooting himself at his home in Chandigarh’s Sector 11. Authorities have classified his death as a suicide.
In a note found at the scene, Puran Kumar accused 11 current and former officers, including Kapur and Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya, of engaging in caste-based discrimination.
Following the incident, the Haryana government placed Kapur on a two-month leave starting October 14, while Bijarniya was reassigned from his position as Rohtak superintendent of police on Saturday.
OP Singh, who was appointed as the acting chief of the state police during Kapur's leave, has now been designated as the officiating DGP until further notice. He will also maintain his roles as head of the Haryana narcotics control bureau and director of the forensic science laboratory in Madhuban.
Singh is set to retire on December 31, prompting speculation that the state government may submit a list of senior IPS officers to the Union Public Service Commission for the appointment of a new police chief.
Kapur has been reassigned as the chairman of the Haryana Police Housing Corporation. The new directives for both officers were issued on Sunday, coinciding with the conclusion of Kapur's two-month leave.
