Honoring a Visionary Leader

On Monday, Haryana's Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini paid homage to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, during a ceremony in Ambala marking his birth anniversary. He described Dr. Mukherjee as a visionary leader who dedicated his life to the unity and integrity of the nation. While addressing the attendees, CM Saini emphasized that Dr. Mukherjee represented not just an individual but a "resolution" that continues to guide the country today. He stated, 'We have gathered here to remember a great soul who was not merely a person; he symbolized an idea and a commitment. He was a visionary leader of his time, dedicating his entire life to the unity, integrity, and self-respect of the nation.'

Legacy and Celebration

Highlighting the enduring impact of Dr. Mukherjee's legacy, Saini remarked that such great personalities serve as examples for future generations. He noted that there are figures in history who are not only read about but whose lives are truly lived; they lead their time and guide future generations. 'We are here to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and to pay our respects,' he added. The Chief Minister further announced that the celebrations for Dr. Mukherjee's 125th anniversary would be extensive and long-lasting.

A Two-Year Celebration

Saini mentioned that the festivities for Dr. Mukherjee's 125th anniversary would span two years, commencing last year and continuing until July 2027. Dr. Mukherjee was the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which serves as the ideological predecessor of the BJP.

A Multifaceted Personality

Born on July 6, 1901, in Kolkata, Dr. Mukherjee was a multifaceted individual—a patriot, educator, parliamentarian, politician, and humanitarian. He inherited a legacy of scholarship and nationalism from his father, Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, who was a respected Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University and a judge at the Calcutta High Court. In 1940, he became the executive president of the Hindu Mahasabha and declared complete independence for India as his political goal. The Jana Sangh, the political predecessor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), commemorates his death anniversary on June 23, 1953, as 'Shaheed Diwas' (Martyr's Day).
