Haryana Authorities Suspend Internet Services Ahead of Religious Procession

Preventive Measures in Nuh District
In an effort to prevent communal tensions before the annual Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra, officials in Nuh district, Haryana, have suspended mobile internet and bulk SMS services as of Monday. This precautionary measure comes in light of the violent communal clashes that occurred during last year's procession, which resulted in the loss of six lives.
Restrictions on Weapons and Sound Equipment
District Magistrate Vishram Kumar Meena issued an order on Sunday under Section 163 of the Indian Citizen Security Code, 2023, prohibiting the carrying of all types of weapons, including licensed firearms, swords, sticks, tridents, rods, knives, and chains. The only exception is for the kirpan, which may be carried by members of the Sikh community as a religious symbol.
Prohibition of Provocative Material
The order also strictly bans the use of DJs, loudspeakers, or sound amplification devices that could incite religious sentiments or offend community feelings during the procession. Additionally, the district administration has imposed a ban on the sale of meat along the yatra route, with meat shops along the Kanwar route required to close until July 24.
Internet Suspension and Surveillance
An official reported that internet services in the area have been suspended, and drone surveillance has been initiated. The Haryana government has ordered the suspension of mobile internet, bulk SMS services (excluding banking and mobile recharge), and all dongle services for 24 hours, from 9 PM on July 13 to 9 PM on July 14. However, voice calls are exempt from this suspension.
Objective of the Measures
According to the state home department, these measures aim to prevent the spread of misinformation and rumors through social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and X, and to monitor any gatherings of protesters that could lead to arson, vandalism, or other violent activities, potentially causing harm to life and property.
Security Arrangements
Police have stated that gaurakshak Bittu Bajrangi will not be allowed to participate in the yatra, and his social media accounts have been suspended. Furthermore, there will be a ban on the sale of petrol or diesel in open containers at petrol stations in Nuh district from 6 AM to 12 PM on Monday. Approximately 2,500 police personnel will be deployed during the procession, and all government and private schools in the district will remain closed that day.
