Haryana Sports Minister Encourages Athletes
On Saturday, Gaurav Gautam, the Sports Minister of Haryana, expressed his best wishes to the state's athletes who will compete in the upcoming Asian Games 2026. He announced that a total of 80 sportspersons from Haryana will represent India at this prestigious multi-sport event.
In a statement to the media, Gautam emphasized the pride these athletes will bring to the nation as they carry the Indian flag in Japan. He stated, "The Asian Games kick off on September 19, featuring 80 athletes from Haryana. They will proudly wave the Indian tricolor in Japan and return home with medals."
Overview of the Asian Games 2026
The 20th Asian Games commenced in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on Saturday and will run until October 4. Athletes from various Asian countries are competing in numerous sporting events. Haryana has consistently been a significant contributor to India's success in sports, especially in wrestling, boxing, athletics, and shooting.
Leading the Indian Contingent
Kabaddi star Pawan Sehrawat and Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker were the flag bearers for India during the opening ceremony of the 2026 Asian Games. The ceremony, held at the Paloma Mizuho Stadium, marked the official start of the Games, with India represented by a contingent of 503 athletes across 36 sports.
Sehrawat, who was part of the gold-medal-winning men's kabaddi team in the previous Asian Games, had the honor of carrying the Tricolor alongside Bhaker.
Bhaker, a celebrated athlete with two Olympic medals, is competing in the women's 10m air pistol, women's 25m pistol, and the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team events. She made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics by becoming the first athlete from independent India to win two medals in a single Olympic edition.
Bhaker's Emotional Response
In a video message prior to the ceremony, Bhaker shared her emotional reaction to being selected as a flag bearer, describing it as a "heartwarming" experience. She reflected on her journey in the sport, recalling her early days and expressing gratitude for her achievements.
"When I learned about my selection yesterday, I was flooded with memories from my beginnings in the sport. I never imagined I would reach this point. It’s truly a heartwarming feeling, and I feel proud and honored to represent my country as the flag bearer. I want to thank God and everyone for their love and support," she stated.
India's Medal Aspirations
India aims to surpass its previous record from the 2022 Asian Games, where the country achieved an impressive total of 107 medals, including 28 gold, 38 silver, and 41 bronze.
