Harsh Tokas Sets His Sights on Commonwealth Glory
Indian judoka Harsh Tokas is determined to make history at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Competing in the 81kg category, he aspires to be the first Indian to clinch a gold medal in judo at this prestigious event. At just 23 years old, Tokas is gearing up for his debut at the Commonwealth Games and has been rigorously preparing for this significant milestone in his career.
Intense Preparation for a Unique Experience
"My training has been incredibly intense over the last few months. I am fully committed and have put in 100% effort. Competing at this level is a new experience for me, and I am eager to see how it unfolds. I will be competing in the 81kg category, and while I am aware that challenges await, I plan to approach the competition with a free spirit. My ultimate goal is to win gold, as no Indian has ever achieved this in judo at the Commonwealth Games. Bringing home a gold medal would not only be a personal triumph but also a historic achievement for our nation," Tokas expressed.
A Rising Star in Judo
Tokas has steadily climbed through the ranks of India's judo scene, making a name for himself on the Asian circuit. His accolades include a bronze medal at the 2018 Macau Cadets Asian Cup and a top-eight finish at the Asian Cadet Championships that same year. Additionally, he secured a spot among the top five at the 2019 Asia-Oceania Cadet Championships.
India's Ambition for Judo Success
Now competing in the senior 81kg category, Tokas earned his spot on India's Commonwealth Games team through a national selection process. He will join a six-member men's judo team in Glasgow, where India aims to achieve its first-ever gold medal in judo at the Commonwealth Games. The country's best performance in this sport occurred during the 2014 Glasgow Games, where Indian judokas brought home four medals, including two silvers and two bronzes.
Team Departure and Challenges Ahead
The Indian judo team is scheduled to depart for Glasgow on July 27, with competitions commencing on July 31 at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC). Initially, the team consisted of 14 members, but it has been reduced to 12 due to the withdrawal of men's 73kg judoka Arun Kumar following a positive anti-doping test and the provisional suspension of Birmingham 2022 silver medallist Tulika Maan due to whereabouts failures.
Despite these challenges, Tokas remains a strong medal contender as he prepares for his first Commonwealth Games, driven by the ambition to make history.
