Harivansh Set to Reassume Role as Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman
Harivansh's Return to Deputy Chairman Position
Harivansh, who recently concluded his term, is poised to take on the role of Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha once again following his reappointment to the upper house. Sources indicate that he is likely to be re-elected as Deputy Chairman, as no proposals have been submitted by the opposition before the deadline of April 26 at noon. The election is expected to be conducted by consensus.
The proposal for Harivansh's election has been put forth by JP Nadda, the leader of the house, with support from BJP member S Fangnon Konyak. This proposal is anticipated to be passed via a voice vote. Subsequently, Chairman SP Radhakrishnan will declare Harivansh as elected Deputy Chairman. According to sources, following established tradition, Harivansh will be escorted to the chair by a member from the ruling party (likely the leader of the house) and a member from the opposition (likely the opposition leader).
On Thursday, Harivansh submitted his nomination for the Deputy Chairman position. The election for the Deputy Chairman is expected to take place on Friday under Rule 7 of the Rajya Sabha's operational and procedural regulations. Official proceedings are scheduled to commence at 11 AM after the submission of documents in the house. Harivansh's term in the Rajya Sabha ended on April 9, and the following day, President Droupadi Murmu nominated him to the house. He has served as Deputy Chairman since 2018, originally elected as a member of the JD(U).
