Hardik Pandya Faces Penalty for Slow Over Rate in IPL 2025 Match

Mumbai Indians Captain Penalized

Mumbai: Hardik Pandya, the captain of Mumbai Indians, has been fined due to his team's slow over rate during their IPL 2025 match against Gujarat Titans at Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday.

This penalty, amounting to Rs 24 lakhs, was imposed as it marked the second violation of the season regarding minimum over-rate rules under the IPL's Code of Conduct. Other players in the Playing XI, including the Impact Player and concussion substitute, faced fines of either Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, whichever was lower, according to the IPL announcement.

Previously, several players, including Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants), Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans), Axar Patel (Delhi Capitals), Sanju Samson (Rajasthan Royals), Rajat Patidar (Royal Challengers Bengaluru), Riyan Parag (Rajasthan Royals), and Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians), have been penalized for similar slow over-rate infractions this season.

Additionally, Ashish Nehra, the head coach of Gujarat Titans, received a reprimand for breaching Article 2.20, which addresses conduct contrary to the spirit of the game, resulting in a fine of 25% of his fees.

The IPL statement noted, “Ashish Nehra has been fined 25% of his match fees and has accrued one demerit point for violating the IPL Code of Conduct. He acknowledged the Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 and accepted the Match Referee’s decision.”

For Level 1 breaches, the Match Referee's ruling is conclusive and must be adhered to.

Article 2.20 of the IPL Code of Conduct encompasses all behaviors that contradict the spirit of the game and are not explicitly addressed by other specific offences outlined in the Code.

Following a thrilling rain-affected match where Gujarat Titans secured a four-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) using the DLS method, GT ascended to the top of the standings with 16 points, surpassing Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) due to a superior net run-rate, while MI dropped to fourth place.
