Harbhajan Singh Critiques India-Pakistan Match Amid Rising Tensions
Harbhajan Singh's Strong Stance on India-Pakistan Cricket Relations
Former Indian leg-spinner Harbhajan Singh has voiced his concerns regarding India's participation in the upcoming Men's Asia Cup 2025 against Pakistan, especially in light of growing public sentiment against sporting ties with the neighboring nation. His remarks come after recent terror incidents, including the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, which have intensified calls for India to refrain from engaging in cricketing events with Pakistan.
Surprisingly, the Asia Cup schedule has confirmed a match between India and Pakistan on September 14 in Dubai, with the possibility of additional encounters in the Super Four and the final, depending on the results. Harbhajan expressed his disbelief at this decision, emphasizing that national interests should take precedence over sporting commitments.
“They need to recognize what truly matters. For me, the sacrifices made by soldiers stationed at the border, who often go unseen by their families and sometimes pay the ultimate price, are monumental. In comparison, skipping a cricket match is trivial,” Harbhajan stated in an interview.
He further remarked, “Our government maintains the stance that 'Khoon aur paani ek saath nahi beh sakte' (blood and water cannot flow together). It is unacceptable to engage in cricket while tensions persist at the border. Until these significant issues are resolved, cricket remains a minor concern. The nation must always come first.”
“Our identity is tied to this country. Whether one is a player, an actor, or anyone else, no individual is greater than the nation. The country’s needs must be prioritized, and not playing a cricket match is a minor issue compared to our national responsibilities,” he added.
This isn't the first instance where Harbhajan has taken a firm stand. Previously, during the World Championship of Legends (WCL) match between India Champions and Pakistan Champions, social media outrage led to the match's cancellation. Despite Harbhajan, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, and Irfan Pathan's willingness to participate, the India Champions ultimately withdrew from the semi-final, allowing Pakistan a walkover, which they later lost to South Africa in the final.
“Our soldiers are at the border, safeguarding us and our nation. Their bravery and the sacrifices made by their families are commendable. Meanwhile, we are here playing cricket,” he remarked.
“Are they really that significant? Why should every news outlet give them attention? If we have chosen to boycott them and avoid communication, then why showcase them? The media has a responsibility to refrain from exacerbating the situation,” Harbhajan stated.
“As I mentioned, cricketers should avoid interactions, including handshakes, with Pakistani players. Additionally, the media should limit coverage of Pakistani players and officials, as it grants them unwarranted prominence,” he concluded.
