Harbhajan Singh Comments on Bangladesh's Request to Relocate T20 World Cup Matches
Harbhajan Singh's Response to BCB's Request
Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has shared his thoughts regarding the Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) appeal to shift its matches away from India during the upcoming 2026 Men's T20 World Cup. He emphasized that India is willing to host all participating teams, but ultimately, the decision lies with Bangladesh and the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The BCB has officially approached the ICC, expressing concerns over safety and security, and requesting that their matches be moved. The tournament is set to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. In a statement, Harbhajan called for a calm approach, suggesting that the situation should be addressed through appropriate channels. He remarked, "Given the recent events, Bangladesh is hesitant to travel to India. What transpired in Bangladesh is unfortunate. The ICC must decide on their request. We are open to welcoming everyone to India, but the choice to come here is theirs."
Importance of Institutional Resolution
Harbhajan highlighted that such matters should be resolved within the ICC's framework rather than through public discourse. His remarks come amid ongoing tensions in cricket relations between India and Bangladesh.
In a related development, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) announced the release of Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 roster, following a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia explained that this decision was made "due to recent developments," and KKR would be permitted to sign a replacement if necessary. Mustafizur was acquired by KKR for Rs 9.20 crore during last year's mini-auction.
Bangladesh Government's Response
In reaction to these events, the Bangladesh government has suspended IPL 2026 broadcasts within the country. The Press Information Department released a statement indicating that, "Under these circumstances... until further notice, all IPL matches and related programs will remain suspended from broadcast/telecast in Bangladesh."
The government has enforced an indefinite ban on the airing and promotion of the IPL, citing the controversy surrounding Mustafizur's exclusion from the KKR team. This directive, sanctioned by the relevant authorities, confirmed that all IPL-related broadcasts, promotions, and event coverage would cease immediately.
Bangladeshi officials have asserted that Mustafizur's removal was executed under BCCI's instructions and criticized the action as lacking a reasonable justification. These developments have heightened uncertainty as the T20 World Cup approaches, with the ICC now expected to evaluate Bangladesh's request.
