Aizawl, May 7: H Lalremtluanga from the Zoram People's Movement was officially sworn in as the Mayor of the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Thursday.

R Lalawmpuii has also taken the oath as the new Deputy Mayor of the corporation.

During a ceremony at the AMC Board of Corporators meeting hall in the Thuampui area, Aizawl Deputy Commissioner Lalhriatpuia administered the oath to the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and 17 newly elected corporators, which included four Executive Corporators.

At 43 years old, Lalremtluanga has a diverse background, having worked as a teacher in a private institution, an outreach worker with FXB International, and as an assistant in a public sector organization before entering politics.

Lalawmpuii is currently the president of the women's wing of the ZPM.

In the AMC elections held on April 21, the ZPM achieved a significant victory, claiming 17 out of 19 seats in the municipal body. The opposition parties, Mizo National Front and Indian National Congress, secured one seat each.

The BJP, which contested in 11 seats, did not win any.

All three major parties—ZPM, MNF, and Congress—fielded candidates in all 19 wards, with a total of 68 candidates, including 28 women, participating in the elections.

Six wards were designated for women, and the ZPM won all six seats.

According to the State Election Commission, the civic polls on April 21 saw a voter turnout of 62.77%, with over 239,000 eligible voters.

The AMC was established in 2010 under the Mizoram Municipalities Act, 2007, and consists of 19 wards. The Congress party won the first municipal elections in 2010, while the MNF dominated the subsequent elections in 2015 and 2021.
