Indian weightlifter Gyaneshwari Yadav made headlines by securing a silver medal in the women's 53kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026, held in Glasgow, Scotland, on July 27.


She achieved a total lift of 199kg, comprising 88kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk, marking an impressive personal best in her debut at the Commonwealth Games. At just 23 years old, Gyaneshwari became the fifth Indian athlete to earn a medal in this edition of the Games, enhancing the country's overall medal count.


Previous Medalists Contribute to India's Success

Prior to Gyaneshwari's achievement, other Indian weightlifters, including Mirabai Chanu, Jhandu Kumar, Rishikanta Singh, and Muthupandi Raja, had already secured medals in various weight categories, showcasing India's strength in weightlifting at the Glasgow Games.


Overcoming Challenges to Achieve Success

Despite facing menstrual cramps during the competition, Gyaneshwari displayed remarkable resilience and determination. "I am extremely happy. This is my first Commonwealth Games. My goal was to achieve my personal best, and that's exactly what I did here. I also tried to win a gold medal for India, but the competition was very tough," she expressed to reporters after her victory.


She further shared, "Today was the first day of my period, so I wasn't sure how my body would respond or whether I'd be able to perform as expected. But I gave it everything I had."


Gyaneshwari's Background and Journey

Hailing from Bhodiya village in the Rajnandgaon district of Chhattisgarh, Gyaneshwari comes from a modest family. Her father, an electrician, and her mother, a homemaker, have been supportive of her athletic pursuits. Initially a powerlifter, she transitioned to weightlifting and quickly made a name for herself on the international stage.


In 2021, she clinched a gold medal at the Khelo Youth Games, setting multiple youth records. The following year, she earned a silver medal at the IWF Junior World Championships, lifting a total of 156kg in the 49kg category. In 2023, she achieved double gold medals at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Greater Noida.


Gyaneshwari made her World Championships debut in 2025, finishing fifth with a total lift of 182kg. The next year, she secured bronze overall in the 53kg category and silver in the snatch round at the Asian Weightlifting Championships, further solidifying her status as a rising star in weightlifting.
