Gwalior, July 2: A disturbing video that has gone viral depicts a man being attacked by a group of passengers at Gwalior Railway Station, prompting the Government Railway Police (GRP) to initiate a departmental investigation and reassign a Sub-Inspector due to alleged negligence in the case.
The GRP's actions followed claims that they did not promptly pursue legal measures against the individual, who was detained after reportedly attempting to steal from a woman, and instead allowed him to leave the scene.
The incident reportedly occurred on June 29 around 4 p.m. on Platform No. 2, when a woman accused the young man of trying to snatch a gold earring from her.
As she cried out for help, other passengers apprehended him and allegedly began to assault him until security personnel intervened.
During the chaos, the young man was seen picking up a child with him, seemingly to protect himself from the crowd's aggression.
A bystander captured the event on video, which subsequently spread across social media, highlighting both the mob violence and the police's response.
According to officials, personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) managed to rescue the man from the mob and transferred him to the GRP for further action. However, the case's management faced criticism after it was revealed that no immediate legal action was taken against him.
In light of the viral footage, the Railway Police Headquarters has ordered a preliminary investigation.
As a result of the inquiry, GRP Sub-Inspector Chetan Korolia has been reassigned to police lines while the departmental investigation is ongoing.
Railway Superintendent of Police Rajesh Singh stated, “A departmental inquiry has been initiated into the incident. We are also identifying the individuals involved in the assault based on the viral video. Legal action will be taken against anyone found guilty.”
This incident has raised significant concerns regarding how railway police handle theft allegations and the increasing issue of mob justice in public spaces. The findings of the departmental inquiry will likely influence any further disciplinary or legal actions.
