Guwahati, Oct 26: The Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) in Guwahati is anticipated to commence operations by November 16, as it temporarily assumes responsibilities from the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) during its renovation phase.
Assam's Health Minister Ashok Singhal announced on Monday that the construction at MMCH is nearing completion, with only final cleaning tasks pending.
“We will soon transfer equipment to the new facility, and seven departments from GMCH will relocate to this hospital,” he stated during his visit to MMCH to evaluate the progress of the construction and the functioning of its departments.
In a post on social media, the minister emphasized the need for officials to adhere to the timeline and enhance hospital operations and patient care.
Singhal also mentioned that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sanctioned the reconstruction of GMCH to expand it into a 3,000-bed facility.

The redevelopment project is expected to span approximately three years, during which MMCH will operate as an annex to GMCH.
“This facility will evolve into a comprehensive medical college. However, the Chief Minister has approved the reconstruction of GMCH to accommodate 3,000 beds. Given that the redevelopment may take around three years, we will need to shift operations to MMCH, which will serve as an annex during this time and later transition into a medical college,” Singhal explained.
Present during the visit were Director of Medical Education Dr. Manoj Kumar Choudhury, GMCH Principal Dr. Babul Bezbaruah, Superintendent Dr. Debajit Choudhury, and other health officials.
Previously, MMCH operated as an extension of GMCH. In 2010, the state Health Department integrated the two hospitals to alleviate the patient burden at GMCH and enhance healthcare services.
This arrangement included specialist services and the operation of various departments at MMCH.
