Arrests Made in Guwahati Abduction Case

Guwahati, June 11: In a swift operation, law enforcement apprehended four suspects within a day for their involvement in the abduction and extortion of a local man in Guwahati on Tuesday.

The victim, identified as Munindra Das, was taken against his will from Machkhowa while he was en route to sell vegetables. The assailants forced him into a vehicle, extorted Rs 1,500 from him, and subsequently released him near Kamakhya Gate.

The individuals arrested include Sirajul Islam from Hatigaon, Babul Ali alias Jonab Ali from Sarthebari, and Jakir Ali and Saheb Ali from Hajo. Authorities have indicated that two additional suspects remain at large.

During a press briefing at Bharalu Police Station, DCP (West) Padmanabh Baruah revealed that the vehicle utilized in the crime was rented. It belonged to a resident of Panjabari who had leased it to Sirajul Islam, who then sublet it to Babul Ali for the abduction.

Baruah noted that the gang had traveled to Guwahati from Barpeta and were active in areas such as Paltan Bazar, Machkhowa, and Panbazar during the early hours, specifically targeting individuals for extortion.

Among the arrested, Saheb Ali had a prior arrest in Satgaon for chain and mobile theft, while Jakir Ali was previously detained in Hojai in 2023 for theft-related offenses. Police suspect that this group may also be linked to drug trafficking and minor thefts.

Baruah commented on a concerning trend, stating, “We are observing that individuals with drug addictions are increasingly involved in such criminal activities. Previously, they relied on two-wheelers, but now they appear to be using cars.”
