Guwahati Launches 'Sikun Guwahati-Mur Guwahati' Cleanliness Initiative
Guwahati's New Cleanliness Campaign
Guwahati, Aug 9: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has initiated a new cleanliness campaign named 'Sikun Guwahati-Mur Guwahati', aimed at enhancing the city's cleanliness, greenery, and overall livability.
The campaign was inaugurated by State Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, alongside Mayor Mrigen Sarania and GMC commissioner Dr MS Lakshami Priya.
This event took place at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra on Thursday, coinciding with the third anniversary of the current GMC council and celebrating the city's rise to the 44th position in the Swachh Survekshan 2024 rankings.
During the launch, GMC commissioner Dr Priya elaborated on the various aspects of the 'Sikun Guwahati-Mur Guwahati' initiative, which includes an inter-ward cleanliness competition aimed at evaluating hygiene, cleanliness, and community involvement across homes, schools, markets, offices, hospitals, and public areas.
Mayor Mrigen Sarania remarked, "Sikun Guwahati is a movement designed to foster civic pride and encourage behavioral changes. Together, we can transform Guwahati into a cleaner and healthier environment."
Each ward will undergo assessments by both internal teams and external evaluators, with rewards to encourage friendly competition.
The initiative emphasizes improving waste segregation at the source, enhancing cleanliness at the ward level through inter-ward contests, bolstering solid and liquid waste management infrastructure, and raising public awareness through interactive campaigns and mass participation.
Additionally, Mallabaruah introduced a commemorative journal that outlines GMC's achievements and challenges over the last three years.
Safety equipment was distributed to dedicated GMC workers and Aapda Mitras, with special recognition given to Safai Mitras for their contributions to GMC's success in the Swachh Survekshan 2024.
The event also saw the launch of the 'GIS Geo Hub' portal by the Directorate of Town and Country Planning, which aims to facilitate better urban planning through detailed location-based data.
Attendees included MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita, Deputy Mayor Smita Roy, GMC councillors, and various community leaders.
