Guwahati, June 1: Residents in Guwahati and various regions of Assam are expected to endure hot and humid weather for the next two days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning indicating that daytime temperatures may exceed normal levels by 3°C to 5°C during this time.
According to a statement from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati, the combination of clear to partly cloudy skies and intense solar heating is likely to elevate maximum temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius in several areas of Assam over the next 48 hours.
Data from the IMD revealed that Guwahati recorded a maximum temperature of 35.4°C on Sunday, with a minimum of 25.8°C early Monday morning.
Among the key locations monitored, Dhubri and Silchar reported the highest temperatures at 35.6°C, while North Lakhimpur noted the lowest minimum temperature at 23.3°C.
The weather office indicated that hot and humid conditions are expected to persist in several areas across Assam due to the combination of high temperatures and increased humidity levels.
While the IMD mentioned that the heat should be manageable for most individuals, it warned that vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with pre-existing health conditions might face health risks.
Extended exposure to high temperatures could result in dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and other heat-related health issues, according to the department.
The IMD has recommended that individuals wear light-colored, loose-fitting cotton attire, stay well-hydrated, and limit exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours.
Farmers and outdoor workers are advised to reduce their time in the sun, and it is suggested not to leave children or pets inside parked vehicles. Organizers of public events and rallies should also take precautions during the hottest parts of the day.
On a positive note, the IMD has forecasted a decrease in maximum temperatures by 4°C to 6°C across Assam following the next 48 hours.
