Gurnoor Brar Attributes Success to Team Support and Positive Environment
Gurnoor Brar Credits Team Environment for Success
Indian fast bowler Gurnoor Brar has expressed gratitude towards the supportive atmosphere within the team and the management's encouragement, which he believes has allowed him to perform freely. Following India's thrilling four-run victory over New Zealand in the rain-affected second ODI in Wellington, where he achieved a personal best of four wickets for 30 runs, Brar was awarded the Player of the Match.
In the post-match press conference, Brar highlighted that the management consistently motivates pace bowlers to concentrate on their strengths and execute their strategies, regardless of the match conditions or the results of individual deliveries. He stated, "Support is crucial for every player, and we all receive it here; the environment is very uplifting. In India, we bowled similarly on flat pitches, but execution was still necessary. They encouraged us, saying, 'The more consistently you hit the right lengths, the better your results will be.' Coming to New Zealand, they reiterated the same message: 'Trust your strengths and bowl freely. Whether it gets hit for a four or a six is irrelevant; just bowl without hesitation.' That's what I'm doing, and the outcomes are evident."
Leadership and Training Focus
When asked about the confidence shown by captain Shubman Gill, Brar noted that the captain supports every player equally, focusing on effort, training, and ongoing improvement rather than evaluating players based on single performances. He remarked, "He supports everyone equally. No one is judged on a single performance. What counts is the effort you put in, the direction of your training, and your desire to improve. Shubman embodies this himself—he has a strong desire to keep enhancing his game and contribute to the team. He frequently shares his plans with us, and we progress together."
Guidance from Morne Morkel
Brar also acknowledged the valuable guidance he has received from India's bowling coach, Morne Morkel, whose bowling style and height are similar to his own. As India aims to build a formidable pace attack for the upcoming World Cup in South Africa, Brar mentioned that Morkel has been instrumental in helping him identify the lengths that best suit his bowling style on various pitches, especially for middle-overs bowling. He stated, "Morne Morkel imparts a lot of knowledge. Given my height and a bowling style akin to his, he continuously advises me on the optimal lengths for specific pitches. This dialogue is ongoing. Regarding the World Cup—the ultimate goal is to win it, so that is always in our minds. However, I prefer to take it one match at a time and focus on improving my performance in the next game. As we head to Hamilton, my priority will be to rectify any mistakes from today. While the long-term goal is present, executing well in each game is my main focus."
Upcoming Matches
India's narrow victory in Wellington has given them a 2-0 lead in the five-match ODI series. Brar's impressive four-wicket haul was crucial in limiting New Zealand to 134 runs before rain disrupted India's chase of 135, with the visitors ahead of the DLS par score. The next challenge for India will be against New Zealand in the third ODI in Hamilton, where Brar aims to maintain his strong performance while continuing to refine his bowling skills under Morkel's mentorship.
