The 31-year-old striker concludes a remarkable career that spanned nearly ten years, during which he earned 130 international caps and scored 33 goals, establishing himself as a pivotal player in the resurgence of Indian hockey.

Born on January 26, 1995, in Khailara, Amritsar, Gurjant quickly ascended through the junior ranks, showcasing his speed and sharp instincts. He played a crucial role in one of the most celebrated moments in Indian hockey history: the Junior World Cup victory in Lucknow in 2016. After netting a goal in the final to secure gold, he made his senior international debut in 2017 and became a key player in the Indian attack.

His most significant accomplishments came at the Olympic Games, where he was instrumental in securing bronze medals for India at both Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024. Additionally, Gurjant contributed to India's gold medal wins at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, the 2017 Asia Cup, and several Asian Champions Trophy titles. In recognition of his achievements, he received the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2021.

In his retirement announcement, Gurjant expressed, "It is with a blend of pride and deep emotion that I announce my retirement today. I began my hockey journey looking up to the seniors in this room, and fulfilling my dream of playing for India alongside them is something I will always cherish.

"I feel immensely satisfied to have been part of the historic revival of Indian hockey and to have won two Olympic medals. Beyond the trophies, the most cherished memory I carry is the time spent with my teammates. We lived like a family, supporting each other through all the highs and lows. I want to extend my gratitude to Hockey India for providing me with such a respectful farewell. I leave the international stage as a very happy and proud man."

Dilip Tirkey, president of Hockey India, paid tribute to Gurjant's contributions, stating, "Gurjant Singh has been an integral part of India's hockey narrative for nearly a decade. His speed, energy, and knack for scoring in crucial moments made him a player that opponents always respected. He represented his country with immense pride, and we are grateful for all he has contributed to Indian hockey."

Hockey India secretary general Bhola Nath Singh remarked, "Gurjant's journey from the fields of Punjab to two Olympic podiums serves as an inspiration for every young athlete in our nation. His commitment over the years reflects his character, and his legacy will motivate future generations."
