Gulveer Singh's Impressive Performance

On Friday, Gulveer Singh clinched a silver medal in the men's 10,000m event at the Asian Games held in Aichi-Nagoya. He completed the race with a time of 28:29.38, finishing just behind Bahrain's Birhanu Balew, who took home the gold with a time of 28:27.51. Throughout the race, Gulveer maintained his position within the leading group and strategically made his move in the final stages, securing his second medal in this event after winning bronze at the 2023 Hangzhou Games.

A Rewarding Experience

"Winning a silver medal for India at the Asian Games is a wonderful feeling. Standing on the podium at such a prestigious event is truly rewarding. Our preparation focused on executing a championship race rather than just aiming for a specific time, and I adhered to the race strategy. This medal is a great motivation, but I recognize that there are many more challenges and races ahead," Gulveer expressed.

Strategic Approach to Racing

Discussing his race strategy, Gulveer emphasized the importance of remaining calm and not getting caught up in a time trial. "Championship races differ significantly from those where the goal is to achieve a fast time. The strategy was to stay composed, remain with the leading pack, and make my move at the appropriate moment. I trusted the plan my coach and I devised, maintained my patience, and fortunately, it paid off," he stated.

Continuous Improvement and Support

Gulveer has been focusing on incremental improvements with the backing of the Athletics Federation of India and the Inspire Institute of Sport. "My goal each year is to enhance my performance slightly. I don’t dwell too much on outcomes, as they follow from thorough preparation. While winning a medal is gratifying, the key for me is to ensure ongoing progress. I am grateful for the support from the Athletics Federation of India and the Inspire Institute of Sport, which has fostered an environment conducive to my training and recovery. My coaches assist me in refining the small details that can lead to significant improvements. I will continue to work diligently to enhance my performance," he remarked.

The Importance of a Support Team

He also acknowledged the critical role of his support team in preparing for high-level competitions. "At this level, it's often the minor details that can make a substantial difference. Having the right team around you, including coaches, physiotherapists, strength and conditioning specialists, and recovery personnel, allows for complete focus on training. When these details are consistently managed, it enhances performance on race day."

India's Continued Success in Athletics

Gulveer's silver medal adds to India's achievements in athletics as the competition at the Asian Games progresses.
