Gulveer Singh Achieves New National Half-Marathon Record
In a remarkable feat, Gulveer Singh, India's prominent distance runner, shattered the national men's half-marathon record during the New York City Half Marathon held on Sunday. The 27-year-old athlete, representing the army, finished with an impressive time of 59:42, securing third place. South Africa's Adriaan Wildschutt claimed the top spot with a time of 59:30, while Zouhair Talbi, a Moroccan-born American long-distance runner, followed closely with a time of 59:41.
Previously, the national record stood at 1:00:30, a benchmark set by steeplechase expert Avinash Sable during the Delhi Half Marathon in 2020.
A Record Holder with Multiple Achievements
Gulveer Singh has distinguished himself as the first Indian distance runner to hold several national records, spanning events from the 3,000m track to the 25km road race. He is also an Asian Games medallist and holds the national records for both the men's 5,000m and 10,000m track events.
His performance at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships was noteworthy, as he clinched victories in both the 5,000m and 10,000m races.
Looking Ahead: Goals and Training
With aspirations for future competitions, Singh is optimistic about securing a podium finish at the upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games in July and the Asian Games in September. "I feel fit and am eager to achieve strong results in the forthcoming major international events," he expressed.
Currently, Singh is training in Colorado Springs, USA.
