The young athletes of Gujarat are gaining recognition in the sports arena, increasingly pursuing it as a career, inspired by the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In 2010, during his tenure as Chief Minister, he introduced the Khel Mahakumbh initiative. World Athletics Day: A Celebration of Fitness
Every year on May 7, World Athletics Day is celebrated to promote awareness among youth regarding the significance of fitness, discipline, and sports. The theme for 2026, 'Sport: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers', emphasizes athletics' role in empowering youth and fostering unity, equality, and social cohesion through physical activities.
Athletics: The Foundation of Sports
Athletics serves as the cornerstone of all sports, laying the groundwork for comprehensive athletic development. The competitions held under the Khel Mahakumbh initiative in Gujarat are advancing this vision by offering athletes, from villages to state levels, a platform to display their skills.
Khel Mahakumbh 2025: Encouraging Participation
This year, the state-level athletics competition for Khel Mahakumbh 2025 took place in Nadiad, Kheda district, from January 16 to February 3, attracting 9,383 enthusiastic athletes statewide. The event was organized by the state government at the High Performance Centre, led by Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel.
Participation Breakdown
The competition featured 4,694 boys and 4,689 girls across various age categories, including Under-9, Under-11, Under-14, Under-17, and open age groups, showcasing the increasing interest in sports throughout Gujarat.
Variety of Athletic Events
A total of 390 events were conducted during the Khel Mahakumbh 2025 athletics competition, ranging from 30m to 5000m races, hurdles (80m, 100m, 110m, and 400m), long jump, high jump, pole vault, triple jump, shot put, discus throw, javelin throw, hammer throw, relays, and race walking. Outstanding performers were awarded medals and tracksuits.
Path to National Recognition
Khel Mahakumbh has been instrumental in nurturing talented athletes from Gujarat, including Sarita Gayakwad, Mayur Malviya, Ruchit Mori, and Murali Gavit. Sarita, often referred to as the 'Golden Girl' of Dang, clinched a gold medal in the women's 4x400m relay at the 2018 Asian Games, while Murali Gavit secured a bronze in the men's 10,000m at the 2019 Asian Athletics Championships, bringing pride to the state.
