Gujarat Titans Struggle in IPL 2026 Final

In the IPL 2026 final, Gujarat Titans (GT) batting coach Matthew Hayden expressed disappointment over the team's failure to capitalize on Powerplay overs. The Titans, led by Shubman Gill, faced a five-wicket defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who successfully defended their title. Batting first, GT had a rocky start, scoring only 45 runs while losing key players Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, their top run-scorers of the season, during the Powerplay. RCB's disciplined bowling, both with the new ball and in the middle overs, led to a batting collapse for GT, preventing them from gaining momentum. Ultimately, the Titans managed to post a total of 155/8 in their 20 overs, a target that RCB chased down comfortably in just 18 overs.

Hayden Reflects on the Season and Team Dynamics

"It's challenging to pinpoint a single reason for a long season like this," Hayden remarked. "We have top players but struggled in the Powerplay. Our bowlers performed exceptionally well. This franchise has built a strong fanbase supporting Gill, Sai, and Buttler. The team remains calm and composed, with Nehra maintaining a relaxed atmosphere. The essence of this franchise is its family-like culture, which will serve us well in the future." Hayden also praised Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for his outstanding season, finishing as the highest run-scorer with 776 runs, and encouraged young players to continue honing their skills and drawing inspiration from their idols. "My coaching experience exceeded my expectations, focusing on detailed bowling strategies. While we adopt a conservative batting approach, we can hit the ball hard when needed. I commend our staff for enabling us to play aggressively and recover swiftly. The IPL showcases young talent, and it's thrilling to witness the extraordinary Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. To all young players out there, keep playing and learning from your heroes," he added.

GT's Batting Performance

In their innings, GT managed to score only 155/8 in 20 overs. Washington Sundar was the standout performer with the bat, scoring 50 runs off 37 balls, while Nishant Sindhu contributed 20 runs off 18 balls. The RCB bowlers, including Rasikh Dar Salam (3/27), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/29), and Josh Hazlewood (2/37), consistently took wickets, stifling GT's scoring opportunities.

RCB's Path to Victory

RCB began their chase strongly, with a 62-run partnership between Venkatesh Iyer (32 runs off 16 balls) and Virat Kohli. Although GT fought back, reducing RCB to 132/5 at one stage, Kohli's unbeaten 75 runs off 42 balls, which included nine fours and three sixes, led RCB to victory with two overs remaining.

RCB Celebrates Their Second IPL Title

This victory marks RCB's second IPL title and their fourth overall in Indian franchise cricket, which includes two Women's Premier League (WPL) titles.
