Arrest of Health Worker in Espionage Case

On Saturday, the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad apprehended a 28-year-old health worker from Kutch district, accused of leaking sensitive military information to a Pakistani intelligence operative.

This incident marks the third arrest linked to espionage activities in Gujarat within the last eight months.

The suspect, identified as Sahdevsinh Deepubha Gohil, worked as a multipurpose health worker at the Mata-na-Madh Primary Health Centre. He is alleged to have shared classified images and videos of Border Security Force and Indian Navy installations with the spy.

According to police reports, Gohil connected with the Pakistani agent, who went by the name Aditi Bharadwaj, via WhatsApp in mid-2023.

Superintendent of Police (ATS) Siddharth Korukonda stated, “After gaining his trust, the agent requested photos and videos of BSF and Indian Navy facilities, as well as ongoing construction projects near his village.” Gohil reportedly sent the classified materials through WhatsApp.

The police claim that Gohil was aware of the woman's true identity as a Pakistani spy.

In January, he allegedly acquired a new SIM card using his Aadhaar and activated WhatsApp on it before giving it to Bharadwaj, as per the anti-terrorism squad's allegations.

For the leaked information, Gohil reportedly received Rs 40,000 in cash through an intermediary.

He was detained on May 1 and formally arrested on Saturday. Charges have been filed against him under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to criminal conspiracy and waging or abetting war against the government.

Similar charges have been brought against the operative known as Aditi Bharadwaj.

In recent weeks, at least 13 individuals have been arrested nationwide on accusations of espionage for Pakistan, particularly concerning sensitive details about Operation Sindoor, which targets terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

This surge in arrests occurs amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, especially following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in 26 fatalities.
