Gujarat Government Launches Welfare Scheme for Tribal Patients with Serious Illnesses

New Initiative for Tribal Health Care

The Gujarat government has introduced a new welfare initiative aimed at assisting tribal patients suffering from severe health conditions. To support economically disadvantaged tribal families in accessing expensive and advanced medical treatments, the state has allocated ₹2 crore for the fiscal year 2026-27. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, this initiative is set to provide health security to thousands of tribal families. The Tribal Development Department, led by Minister Nareshbhai Patel and State Minister P.C. Baranda, has received administrative approval to implement this program.

Details of the Welfare Scheme

According to proposals from the Chief Minister's Office and the Tribal Development Department, the state government has launched this life-saving scheme specifically for tribal families. Named 'Assistance for Organ Transplants and Robotic Surgeries for Scheduled Tribe Patients,' the program will provide financial aid for complex organ transplants and modern robotic surgeries for serious illnesses. The government has approved a budget of ₹2 crore for the first year of this initiative.

Implementation and Coverage

To ensure effective implementation, the 'Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Center' (IKDRC) located within the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital campus has been designated as the nodal agency for this scheme. A key feature of this initiative is that any expenses not covered by the Ayushman Bharat (PMJAY) or MA card will be addressed by this program. Two examples illustrate how the financial assistance will work.

Financial Assistance Examples

For instance, if the total cost of an organ transplant at IKDRC is ₹6 lakh and ₹3 lakh is covered under PMJAY, the remaining ₹3 lakh will be provided through this scheme. In a private hospital scenario, if the transplant costs ₹10 lakh but the approved rate at IKDRC is ₹6 lakh, after deducting the ₹3 lakh from PMJAY, the beneficiary will be eligible for up to ₹3 lakh in assistance, limited to the approved rate.

Eligibility and Application Process

To qualify for this scheme, beneficiaries must belong to the Scheduled Tribe community in Gujarat and submit a valid caste certificate. Additionally, patients must possess an Ayushman card under the PMJAY scheme. It is essential for patients to contact IKDRC to avail of the benefits, even if they choose to receive treatment at a private hospital, as financial assistance will not be granted without prior approval from IKDRC. Clinical approval from the IKDRC transplant committee is also mandatory. While organ donors can come from any community, financial assistance under this scheme will only be provided to tribal organ recipients.

Exclusions from the Scheme

School children are not separately covered under this scheme, as they are already entitled to free treatment under the 'School Health Program.'
