Gujarat Government Doubles Free Medicines in Hospitals
Significant Increase in Free Medicines
Gandhinagar, March 7: The Gujarat government has announced a remarkable increase in the number of free medicines and surgical supplies available in its hospitals, which has surged from 717 to 1,479 over the past two years. This change follows the inclusion of 150 new medications in the state's Essential Drugs List (EDL).
In response to this update, Dr. Anil Patel, the chief spokesperson for the state BJP, emphasized that the Health Department's expansion of the EDL has greatly enhanced the variety of medications accessible to patients at government healthcare facilities throughout Gujarat.
"This increase demonstrates the state government's commitment to improving treatment access for individuals in both rural and urban settings. Two years ago, only 717 essential drugs were provided free of charge in Gujarat. With the recent addition of 150 new medications, this number has now doubled to 1,479," he stated.
Dr. Patel noted that the medicines and surgical items listed in the EDL will be available at no cost to patients at primary health centers, civil hospitals, and government medical college hospitals across the state.
The initiative aims to ensure that economically disadvantaged patients can receive treatment without financial burdens.
"Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the government is dedicated to delivering quality healthcare directly to villagers, the underprivileged, farmers, and the middle class," he added.
He also mentioned that the expanded list includes medications for serious and chronic conditions.
"By incorporating treatments for significant and long-term diseases such as heart conditions, cancer, neurological disorders, and mental health issues into the EDL, the government has alleviated the financial strain on middle-class and low-income families," he explained.
Furthermore, Dr. Patel highlighted the addition of more anti-infective drugs, respiratory medications, and medical devices, showcasing the government's commitment to enhancing treatment capabilities in public hospitals.
"The state government is devoted to providing modern and optimal treatment options for patients," he remarked.
He also pointed out that the health department conducts an annual review of the drug formulary to ensure it remains current and responsive to changing medical needs.
"The annual review and timely updates of the drug formulary are commendable practices," he concluded.
