Gujarat Eases Alcohol Regulations in GIFT City
New Alcohol Consumption Rules in GIFT City
On Monday, the Gujarat government announced a relaxation of alcohol consumption regulations in the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) located in Gandhinagar. According to the new guidelines, individuals from Gujarat or abroad can now consume alcohol in designated hotels or restaurants within GIFT City by simply presenting a photo ID. The government has eliminated the requirement for a permit to drink alcohol in this financial hub.
The state's Home Department issued a notification on December 20, further easing the rules related to alcohol consumption in GIFT City. While the production, sale, and consumption of alcohol are generally prohibited in Gujarat, the government had previously allowed limited exemptions for GIFT City in 2023, permitting alcohol sales and consumption under specific conditions.
As per the latest notification, non-residents and foreign nationals can now enjoy alcoholic beverages at specified locations in GIFT City by showing a valid photo ID. This new regulation removes the previous requirement for these 'external individuals' to obtain a temporary permit.
Another significant change pertains to the venues where alcohol can be served and consumed. Previously, drinking was restricted to designated wine and dine areas within hotels or restaurants that had the necessary permissions. The updated rules now allow for consumption in additional areas such as lawns, poolside, and terraces.
The notification also states that employees of GIFT City holding a 'liquor access permit' can host up to 25 guests at designated locations, with guests receiving a 'temporary permit' as long as the hosting employee is present.
