The Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) has revealed plans to introduce a new T20 league starting in the 2025–26 domestic season. Anil Patel, the secretary of GCA, shared that while the proposal is in place, specifics such as match dates and the number of participating teams are still under consideration.
Details of the Tournament Still Pending
In a conversation with a sports news outlet, Anil Patel stated:
“We have decided to proceed with our own T20 league. The finer details, including the schedule and team structure, are being worked out.”
Currently, the GCA has not finalized the league's timing, team count, or venues. Most state leagues typically occur in June and July after the IPL, but this period is becoming increasingly crowded. Gujarat may need to identify a different timeframe to ensure adequate visibility for scouts and broadcasters.
The state boasts impressive venues, including the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera, and additional locations in Vadodara, Surat, and Rajkot, which can host the matches.
Importance of the League for Gujarat Cricket
Gujarat has produced notable players like Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja (from Saurashtra). However, many young cricketers in the region often miss out on opportunities to showcase their talent due to limited exposure.
With the introduction of this league, the GCA aims to:
- Identify emerging talent from across the state.
- Offer chances to players not currently in the senior squad.
- Prepare athletes for larger platforms such as the IPL and India A.
- Attract more attention, sponsorship, and funding to Gujarat cricket.
State leagues have already propelled players like Tushar Deshpande (Mumbai), Sai Sudharsan (TNPL), Mayank Yadav (Delhi), and Riyan Parag (Assam) into the IPL and even the national team.
