Gujarat Achieves Milestone in Cancer Screening Ahead of World Cancer Day
Significant Progress in Cancer Screening
Gandhinagar, Feb 3: Over the last four years, Gujarat has made remarkable strides in public health by conducting extensive cancer screenings throughout the state, enhancing early detection and treatment access just before World Cancer Day. According to health department statistics, more than 30 million individuals aged 30 and above have been screened for oral cancer, while over 16 million women have participated in breast cancer screenings, and more than 8.2 million women have been screened for cervical cancer.
World Cancer Day is recognized globally on February 4 each year, aiming to raise awareness and promote action against cancer.
This year's theme, 'United by Unique', emphasizes the significance of personalized care and acknowledges that each person's experience with cancer is distinct. Cancer remains a leading cause of mortality worldwide.
Estimates from the National Cancer Institute indicate that India reported over 1.4 million cancer cases in 2025. Worldwide, nearly 10 million individuals succumb to cancer annually, underscoring the critical need for prevention, early detection, and timely treatment.
In Gujarat, cancer continues to be a significant public health concern. Data from the ICMR–National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research reveal that one in nine men and one in twelve women in the state are at risk of developing cancer during their lifetime.
Tobacco-related cancers are more common among men, while breast and cervical cancers represent a substantial portion of cases among women.
Health officials have pointed out that lifestyle choices, environmental influences, and genetic predispositions contribute to the increasing rates of these cancers.
State health authorities have reported that the comprehensive screening initiative has facilitated the early identification of suspected cases, allowing for quicker referrals and treatment.
"Regular screenings and prompt diagnoses are essential for improving cancer outcomes and saving lives," stated an official.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state government has introduced various initiatives focused on cancer prevention and control.
These initiatives encompass tobacco cessation programs, promotion of balanced diets and regular exercise, vaccination efforts, and community awareness campaigns in both urban and rural settings.
To bolster human resources within the health system, the government has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute to launch a 'Training of Trainers' program.
This initiative aims to train gynecologists, surgeons, dentists, community medicine specialists, and medical officers as master trainers.
With their assistance, over 37,000 frontline health workers across the state are anticipated to receive training to improve cancer screening and referral services. Screening programs for oral, breast, and cervical cancers are being conducted from sub-health centers to medical colleges.
Additionally, day-care chemotherapy centers at district hospitals are providing treatment closer to patients' residences.
The Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute, along with its satellite centers, continues to deliver outpatient services, diagnostic capabilities, surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, further enhancing cancer care throughout the state.
