Gandhinagar, May 1: For the first time, Gujarat's per capita income has surpassed Rs 3 lakh, marking a significant achievement that is approximately 60% above the national average, as per the latest official statistics released on Friday.
This milestone reflects the state's ongoing economic growth, with Gujarat contributing 8.3% to India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), despite representing only about 5% of the nation's population and 6% of its land area.
Additionally, Gujarat accounts for 19% of the total industrial output in the country and plays a crucial role in contributing 26% to India's exports.
Officials attribute this growth to effective financial management and business-friendly policies, highlighting that Gujarat has achieved an average growth rate of 11.4% over the last decade, outpacing the national average.
In recent years, the state has sustained a real growth rate of 8.42%. The government noted that the groundwork for Gujarat's development was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his tenure from 2001 to 2014, which has continued through proactive policy-making and public engagement.
Gujarat's industrial prowess is further enhanced by its strategic position in global trade.
Approximately 40% of India's cargo is processed through the state's ports, underscoring Gujarat's status as a vital gateway for international trade.
The state leads the nation in the chemical sector with a 33% share and is also making strides in emerging industries such as semiconductors and fintech.
Authorities emphasized that Gujarat has achieved comprehensive development across various sectors, from agriculture to financial technology, contributing to the overarching goal of a developed India.
Digital governance initiatives have been expanded, with programs like e-Gram and Seva Setu designed to bring technology and public services to remote areas, facilitating paperless administration and easy access to citizen services.
Major infrastructure projects are in progress, including the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train, which is anticipated to significantly reduce travel times between major cities like Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Surat, while also stimulating economic activity.
Construction is also underway at Lothal for the National Maritime Heritage Complex, aimed at reviving and showcasing India's maritime history.
Tourism and religious infrastructure are being enhanced, with projects such as the Sagar Darshan Path near the Somnath temple and a corridor initiative at Ambaji, along with the 51 Shaktipeeth Parikrama Path.
On the occasion of its 66th Foundation Day, the state government stated, "Through robust financial discipline, transparent governance, and entrepreneurial spirit, Gujarat is progressing towards realizing the national vision of ‘Viksit Bharat by 2047’. The state has established itself as the engine of growth for the country."
