Groundbreaking Jaw Replacement Surgery Performed at AIIMS Bhopal

Innovative Surgery Marks a Milestone in Medical Science
Bhopal, July 2: A remarkable achievement has been recorded at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhopal, where a team of surgeons successfully conducted the first artificial jaw replacement surgery in central India using a specially designed titanium implant.
The surgery was performed on a 62-year-old woman from Mandsaur district, Madhya Pradesh, who had endured chronic jaw pain, facial deformity, and significant challenges in eating and speaking for an extended period.
Prior to this, she had undergone two traditional jaw reconstruction surgeries with titanium plates at a private facility, both of which failed due to the plates breaking, as explained by Dr. B. L. Soni, the Maxillofacial Surgeon who led the operation.
Dr. Soni noted that this surgery was carefully planned with the aid of computer-assisted technology, representing a major advancement in patient-focused reconstructive surgery in the area.
"The patient visited multiple hospitals, but it became clear that her condition could not be treated with standard methods. After numerous consultations, she and her family sought help from the Trauma and Emergency Department at AIIMS Bhopal," Dr. Soni stated.
A multidisciplinary team of medical professionals then evaluated her situation and developed a unique, customized solution. The procedure utilized virtual surgical planning and precision milling techniques.
With over ten years of experience in computer-assisted facial reconstruction, Dr. Soni crafted the implant using medical imaging and proprietary software.
"To ensure the implant fit perfectly, we created a 3D-printed model of the patient's jaw and tested the implant on it. This case was highly intricate, requiring exceptional precision and care at every stage," Dr. Soni remarked.
Following the surgery, the patient demonstrated significant improvement and is now able to eat and speak independently.
Dr. Ajay Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, emphasized that this accomplishment not only transforms the patient's life but also showcases the effectiveness of interdisciplinary medical collaboration and cutting-edge technology.
“AIIMS Bhopal is dedicated to advancing minimally invasive and technology-driven treatments that improve surgical accuracy and facilitate quicker recovery for patients. This case exemplifies our innovative approach and steadfast commitment to patient-centered care," Dr. Singh stated in an official release.
