Great Nicobar Island Project: A Strategic Move for India’s Maritime Security and Economic Growth
Strategic Importance of the Great Nicobar Island Project
Defense sources revealed on Monday that the ambitious Great Nicobar Island project is poised to emerge as a key strategic maritime and economic hub for India. This initiative is also expected to aid in environmental conservation and ensure the safety of indigenous communities. According to the sources, the project will leverage its proximity to international shipping routes and sea lanes of communication (SLOC), reducing dependence on foreign cargo ports while enhancing the presence of India's defense forces.
Comprehensive Development Plans
The Indian government envisions the overall development of the Great Nicobar Island (GNI) through four interconnected projects, which include the International Container Transshipment Port (ICTP), a dual-use greenfield airport and naval air station, a township, and a power plant. This project holds significant strategic value as it is located just 40 kilometers from the Six Degree Channel and is situated along the maritime trade route extending from the Gulf of Aden to the Malacca Strait.
Enhancing Operational Capabilities
Given that two-thirds of the world's oil and half of container traffic pass through this sensitive region, the GNI project will enhance India's operational capabilities in the southeastern Indian Ocean. This will bolster India's reputation as a preferred security partner and a first responder in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) and search and rescue (SAR) operations.
Strengthening Law Enforcement
Defense sources further indicated that the project will also strengthen the role of law enforcement in curbing illegal maritime activities, a vision expressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his doctrine on regional security and development. Continuous maritime and aerial surveillance, along with rapid strategic responses, are essential for India's critical coastal areas, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and key points along the SLOC.
International Container Transshipment Port
The ICTP, located just 40 nautical miles from one of the busiest maritime routes, the Malacca Strait, is set to enhance India's cargo transport ambitions. Considering the strategic and economic benefits, the cabinet approved the establishment of this new airport under the operational control of the Indian Navy last November. This airport will significantly boost India's maritime domain awareness (MDA) and operational reach, which cannot be achieved through the mere expansion of existing defense facilities.
Site Selection for the Greenfield Airport
For the establishment of the greenfield airport, five alternative sites, including INS Baaz located in Campbell Bay, were evaluated based on topography, navigational obstacles, impact on tribal populations, and flora and fauna. Ultimately, Galathia Bay was selected. The potential for developing INS Baaz as a brownfield project faced limitations, leading to its dismissal. One reason was the presence of a hill over 80 meters high to the north of the site, which would require significant alterations for safe operations of large aircraft.
