Grandson Relocates Grandfather's Hut
In today's world, the trend of selling old items to purchase new ones is prevalent, and this extends to homes as well. However, in Barmer, Rajasthan, a grandson took commendable steps to preserve his grandfather's last legacy.
A Touching Story from Sindhari
This heartwarming incident took place in the village of Kardali Nadi, located in the Sindhari sub-district. Here, a hut that was nearly 50 years old was at risk of collapsing due to a weakening foundation. This hut belonged to the grandfather of Purkharam. To safeguard this cherished memory, the grandson arranged for it to be relocated using a hydraulic crane.
Termites Threatening the Structure
Purkharam explained that termites had compromised the hut's foundation, necessitating its relocation. He believes that if the roof is repaired, the hut could remain intact for another 30 to 40 years. Regular maintenance can extend the lifespan of such huts to up to 100 years.
Cost of Relocating the Hut
Purkharam shared that the relocation of the hut using a hydraulic crane cost him only 6,000 rupees. However, the financial aspect was secondary to him; preserving his grandfather's old hut was what truly mattered. Therefore, he acted promptly to ensure its safety.
Cost of Building a New Hut
According to Purkharam, constructing a new hut would require approximately 80,000 rupees and the effort of 50 to 70 workers over two days. Unfortunately, the traditional craft of hut building is fading, with fewer people knowing the authentic methods.
Natural Materials Used in Construction
Huts are built by digging soil from the ground and mixing it with animal dung to create walls. Then, beams and wood are used to prepare the base for the roof. The roofing is made from materials like ak wood, bajra stalks, and various grasses.
Natural Cooling Without AC
Purkharam's mother mentioned that during the hot season, temperatures in the desert can exceed 45 degrees Celsius. Despite this, they do not feel the need for air conditioning or fans, as the hut naturally keeps their home cool.
