Government Updates on LPG Distributorships and Pricing in India

Overview of LPG Distributorships in India

On March 16, the government announced that as of March 1, 2026, India has a total of 25,605 LPG distributorships, with 17,677 located in rural regions. These distributorships are supported by 214 LPG bottling plants operated by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).

To enhance LPG accessibility in rural and remote areas, 8,037 new distributorships were established between April 2016 and February 2026, with 7,444 of them (93%) catering to rural communities, as stated by Suresh Gopi, the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, during a session in the Rajya Sabha.

Consumer Empowerment and Transparency Initiatives

The government has implemented IVRS/SMS refill booking across the nation to boost transparency and empower consumers. This system provides SMS notifications at crucial stages, including booking, cash memo generation, and delivery. Furthermore, OMCs have introduced a Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) that is sent via SMS to ensure verified delivery.

To keep LPG prices affordable, the government compensated OMCs with Rs 22,000 crore for the fiscal year 2022-23 and has approved an additional Rs 30,000 crore for FY 2025-26.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and Current Pricing

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), launched in May 2016, aims to provide deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from economically disadvantaged households across India. As of March 1, 2026, approximately 10.56 crore PMUY connections have been established nationwide.

Currently, the retail price for a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder in Delhi stands at Rs 913. After applying a targeted subsidy of Rs 300 per cylinder for PMUY beneficiaries, the effective price for eligible consumers is Rs 613 per cylinder.

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, India is self-sufficient in petrol and diesel production, with no need for imports to satisfy domestic demand, as all refineries are operating at full capacity and maintaining sufficient crude oil stocks.

Commitment to Domestic Consumers

The government remains focused on safeguarding the interests of domestic consumers and ensuring a steady supply of LPG, especially for households and priority sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions, as highlighted in a recent ministry statement.
