Commitment to Sports Development

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the government's dedication to fostering a robust sports culture in India. This announcement follows the Union Cabinet's approval of an extensive expansion of the Khelo India Scheme, which includes increased funding for National Sports Federations (NSFs), amounting to a total of ₹36,441 crore for the fiscal years 2026-27 to 2030-31.

Enhancing Opportunities for Young Athletes

In a post shared on X, PM Modi highlighted that the enhancements to the Khelo India Scheme and the additional support for NSFs signify the government's commitment to sports. He emphasized that these changes will offer young athletes improved training, state-of-the-art facilities, and enhanced opportunities.

"Our government is fully committed to promoting sports culture in the country. In line with this, approval has been granted for the expansion of the Khelo India scheme, along with an increase in assistance provided to national sports federations. This will provide young athletes across the country with better training, modern facilities, and more opportunities to hone their talents," he stated.

A Transformative Initiative

According to an official press release, this initiative marks the most ambitious sports development program in India since Independence. It aims to significantly uplift the aspirations of the youth in sports, promising a transformative impact over the next decade. The approved budget is nearly eight times that of the previous Khelo India Scheme, underscoring the government's resolve to make sports a fundamental aspect of youth development and national progress.

The revamped scheme is designed to create a clear pathway for every talented young Indian, from school sports fields to Olympic podiums. It aims to ensure that no talent goes unnoticed due to geographical or economic barriers. This initiative aligns with the Khelo Bharat Niti 2025 and the National Education Policy 2020, integrating sports with education, fitness, technology, and high-performance training.

Pathway to Excellence for Young Athletes

For the first time, a comprehensive athlete development pathway has been established to support young sports talents at every stage, from identifying talent to preparing for international competitions. The scheme will create a nationwide sports ecosystem that includes National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs), Khelo India Centres of Excellence (KICoEs), SAI Training Centres (STCs), Khelo India Accredited Academies (KIAAs), Khelo India Centres (KICs), and Youth Sports Companies (YSCs) of the Armed Forces. These institutions will provide world-class coaching, sports science support, and modern infrastructure throughout the country.

Strengthening School Sports

To enhance the school sports framework, the government has introduced two new initiatives: Khelo India Feeder Schools (KIFS) and Khelo India Utkrishta Vidyalayas (KIUV). These initiatives aim to integrate sports into mainstream education and facilitate the early identification and nurturing of talented children.

Expanding the Athlete Pool

A significant reform under the scheme is the introduction of the Emerging Khelo India Athletes (E-KIAs) category, which will expand the structured athlete development ecosystem by nearly tenfold, bringing thousands of additional young athletes under professional coaching and scientific support.

A robust nationwide talent identification framework will ensure continuous tracking and development of promising athletes. The scheme also establishes a clear progression pathway from grassroots competitions to Khelo India and subsequently to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), enabling deserving athletes to receive world-class training and support.

Increasing Competitive Opportunities

Recognizing that sporting excellence relies on regular competition, the revamped scheme significantly enhances India's domestic competition ecosystem. It supports various levels of competitions, including school, university, regional, and sport-specific leagues, alongside national championships to provide sustained competitive exposure to young athletes.

Special emphasis will be placed on expanding opportunities for women athletes, para-athletes, indigenous sports, and using sports as a tool for peace and community development.

Promoting a Healthier India

The Fit India Movement will see significant expansion to promote fitness as a nationwide initiative, particularly among youth. Campaigns will encourage active lifestyles, women's participation in sports, outreach in remote areas, and sports-based initiatives against substance abuse.

Investing in Coaches and Technology

Acknowledging that athletes require world-class support systems, the government will establish the National Coach Accreditation Board (NCAB) to standardize coaching qualifications and enhance the capacity of coaches and support staff across the nation.

The scheme also envisions a unified digital sports platform that integrates athlete databases, infrastructure, competitions, coaching resources, and funding, enabling data-driven planning and personalized athlete development.

Collaborative Efforts for Sporting Excellence

The government aims to strengthen partnerships with private academies, corporate entities, and other institutions to leverage investment and expertise in sports infrastructure and athlete support, creating a comprehensive national sports ecosystem.

Supporting Global Sporting Aspirations

To complement the revamped Khelo India Scheme, the government has also approved a strengthened Assistance to National Sports Federations (ANSF) Scheme for the period 2026-31. This scheme will provide funding for coaching, sports science, modern equipment, and participation in major international competitions.

A National Mission for a Developed India

The revamped Khelo India Scheme represents one of the largest investments in India's sporting future. More than just a sports program, it is a national mission aimed at empowering young Indians with opportunities and excellence. By creating a seamless pathway from grassroots talent to global sporting success, the scheme aspires to nurture champions and position India among the world's leading sporting nations as it moves towards the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047.
