Government Maintains Fuel Prices Amid Rising Aviation Costs
Relief for Travelers and Vehicle Owners
For those who frequently travel by plane and are concerned about rising fares, there is good news. Additionally, individuals using petrol and diesel vehicles can also breathe a sigh of relief as the government has decided not to alter the prices of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) as of May 1, 2026. This means that there will be no increase in ATF prices this month. Furthermore, retail prices for petrol and diesel remain unchanged. Typically, an increase in ATF prices can lead to higher flight ticket costs, but this time, the prices have been kept stable. Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) announced that the prices for domestic airlines' aviation turbine fuel have remained constant, as state-owned oil companies have opted to absorb the recent global fuel price hikes to protect airlines and consumers.
Stability in Fuel Prices
The prices of petrol, diesel, and domestic LPG cylinders have also been maintained to minimize the impact of fluctuations in the international market on the public. IOC stated that there has been no change in the rates of key fuels that affect the general populace. ATF prices are updated based on input costs on the first of every month. While domestic airlines have retained their rates, international airlines have seen an increase in prices.
No Change for Retail Users
According to IOC, the prices of petrol and diesel have not changed for the majority of consumers, who account for approximately 90% of total consumption. This means that retail users, including the average citizen, will not face higher fuel costs. Similarly, the price of domestic LPG remains unchanged for around 330 million people. The rates for kerosene provided under the Public Distribution System (PDS) have also been kept the same.
Overall Price Stability
The statement indicated that there has been no change in the prices of about 80% of petroleum products, providing relief to most consumers. IOC noted that adjustments have been limited to specific industrial sectors with lower consumption, where prices fluctuate monthly based on international market trends.
Minor Adjustments in Certain Products
Without going into extensive detail, the company mentioned that there have been changes in the prices of wholesale and commercial LPG cylinders. Additionally, the rates for wholesale diesel and ATF for international airlines have increased. Interestingly, around 4% of products have seen a price decrease, reflecting the volatility in the global market. Overall, 80% of products have maintained their prices, 4% have decreased, and 16% have increased. IOC emphasized that these measures demonstrate a balanced approach, aiming to provide relief to domestic customers while aligning with international trends.
