Government Introduces Strict Bill Against Exam Paper Leaks and Malpractices

Introduction of New Legislation

New Delhi, July 27 - The government has introduced a stringent bill aimed at combating crimes related to exam paper leaks and the use of unfair means during examinations in the Lok Sabha on Monday. Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, Jitendra Singh, presented the Lok Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 amidst uproar from opposition members.

Details of the Proposed Bill

According to the copy of the bill distributed to Lok Sabha members, individuals involved in leaking exam papers or employing unfair means could face imprisonment ranging from a minimum of five years to a maximum of ten years, along with fines up to ₹50 lakh. The bill proposes amendments to the Lok Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, which includes provisions for organized crimes, suggesting a minimum of seven years of imprisonment and fines up to ₹10 crore.

Fast-Track Courts and Accountability

The legislation also proposes that states and union territories establish fast-track courts to ensure that trial proceedings are completed within three months of filing the charges. This move follows protests organized by the Cockroach Public Party at Jantar Mantar against the NEET paper leak, which led to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Commitment to Exam System Reform

In addition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the formation of a high-level committee to reform the examination system.
