Introduction of Significant Bills in Lok Sabha
The central government has introduced three crucial bills related to women's reservation and delimitation in the Lok Sabha, despite strong opposition from various parties. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal presented the constitutional amendment and delimitation bills, while Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the amendment bill concerning Union Territories. The constitutional amendment bill received 251 votes in favor, while 185 members opposed it. The government asserts that these three bills are essential to effectively implement women's reservation.
Opposition's Concerns and Allegations
Several opposition parties, including Congress, SP, and DMK, have labeled these bills as 'unconstitutional.' Congress leader K.C. Venugopal questioned why the women's reservation bill, passed in 2023, has not been implemented yet. He accused the government of fearing the upcoming 2029 elections. Additionally, leaders like Akhilesh Yadav argued that conducting delimitation without a census contradicts the spirit of the Constitution. The opposition believes these changes could undermine the federal structure of the country.
Government's Defense and Discussion Preparations
In response to the opposition's criticisms, Home Minister Amit Shah stated that discussions should currently focus on technical aspects, with debates on the merits or demerits of the bills to follow later. He requested the Lok Sabha Speaker to ensure that the opposition has ample opportunity to express their views, allowing the government to present its case robustly. Shah clarified that the three bills are interconnected. Conversely, leaders like Asaduddin Owaisi expressed concerns that this could diminish representation from southern states while increasing dominance from Hindi-speaking regions.
