Government Increases Financial Assistance for Ex-Servicemen and Dependents
Enhanced Financial Support for Veterans
On Saturday, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced the full implementation of a 100% increase in financial assistance for ex-servicemen and their dependents, as declared by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. This enhanced support is being provided through programs executed by the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare via the Central Soldiers Board. The MoD emphasized that this decision reaffirms the government's commitment to honoring the service and sacrifices of veterans. In a post on X, the ministry stated, "The 100% increase in financial assistance for ex-servicemen (ESM) and their dependents through the Central Soldiers Board confirms the government's dedication to respecting their service and sacrifice."
Details of the Financial Assistance
Previously, in October 2025, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved the 100% increase in financial aid for ex-servicemen. According to the ministry, the poverty grant has been raised from ₹4,000 to ₹8,000 per beneficiary per month, ensuring lifelong continuous support for elderly veterans over 65 years old and non-pensioner veterans and their widows who lack a regular income. Additionally, the education grant has been increased from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 per month for a maximum of two dependent children (from class I to graduate level) or widows pursuing two-year postgraduate courses.
Marriage Grant and Funding Sources
The marriage grant has also seen a significant increase, going from ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 per beneficiary. This grant applies to the maximum of two daughters of ex-servicemen and for the remarriage of widows, and it is valid for marriages that occur after the issuance of this order. Funding for these initiatives is sourced from the Defence Minister's Ex-Servicemen Welfare Fund, which is a subgroup of the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF).
