Government Highlights Digital Platforms Used in Drug Trafficking

Digital Platforms Facilitate Drug Trafficking
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that organized crime syndicates involved in drug trafficking are increasingly utilizing digital platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Snapchat, Zangi, Signal, and various social media channels for the procurement, transportation, concealment, and distribution of narcotics and psychotropic substances. In response to a question from a member of parliament, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai revealed that this information emerged during investigations conducted by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the central agency responsible for probing drug-related cases.
Minister Rai elaborated that the NCB's investigations have uncovered the use of digital platforms by drug traffickers to coordinate the buying, transporting, hiding, and distributing of drugs and psychotropic substances. He emphasized that the government has implemented several measures through the NCB to combat drug trafficking and related criminal activities facilitated by technology. Highlighting the steps taken by the central government, he mentioned the inclusion of cyber experts to enhance the capability to investigate drug trafficking via the dark web and cryptocurrency-based transactions.
Furthermore, he stated that to strengthen the investigation of cyber-based narcotics, digital forensics, dark web monitoring, cryptocurrency scrutiny, and technology-driven drug trafficking, regular capacity-building programs are being conducted for NCB and other Drug Law Enforcement Agencies (DLEAs) in collaboration with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (US-DEA) and the National Defense University (RRU) in Gandhinagar.
