Fresh Investigation Promised by Government
In a significant development, social activist Bunty Saraji concluded his six-day hunger strike on Saturday after receiving a commitment from Health Minister Dr. Dhaniram Shandil. The minister assured that the death of Manju Sharma at the Regional Hospital in Kullu would undergo a new and unbiased investigation within a 15-day timeframe.
Saraji initiated his hunger strike on August 3, advocating for justice for Manju Sharma and demanding a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her death. His protest garnered increasing public support, highlighting issues within the local healthcare system.
The hunger strike was called off after a video conference with Health Minister Shandil, who promised to take the protesters' demands seriously. Following this assurance, Manju Sharma’s husband, Satish Sharma, offered juice to Saraji, marking the end of the fast.
The government’s commitment to re-examine the case represents a crucial breakthrough, as the protesters had expressed dissatisfaction with the findings of the previous inquiry. They insisted that all aspects of the case be scrutinized without bias, emphasizing that mere departmental actions were insufficient and accountability must be established if negligence was found.
Additionally, the government pledged to take responsibility for the care of Manju Sharma’s newborn daughter, a key demand during the protests.
The controversy surrounding Manju Sharma's death began on June 21, leading to disciplinary measures against a gynecologist and a nurse at the hospital. However, the family and supporters felt that the earlier investigation failed to address critical questions regarding her treatment and death.
Bunty Saraji's hunger strike, which took place at Dhalpur Maidan, drew attention from local residents and political figures, all advocating for justice and accountability. Kullu MLA Sundar Singh Thakur urged Saraji to end his fast, while administrative officials engaged in discussions with the protesters to resolve the situation.
As Saraji's health declined during the hunger strike, the family raised broader concerns about the overall functioning of government hospitals. They called for improved staffing and healthcare facilities, arguing that shortages directly impact patient care.
After concluding his fast, Saraji expressed gratitude to supporters and emphasized that the movement transcends the individual case, focusing on accountability and the quality of healthcare services in Himachal Pradesh.
While the hunger strike has ended, the campaign for justice continues. The government now faces a 15-day deadline to fulfill its promises, raising questions about the independence of the forthcoming investigation, accountability measures, and the support for Manju Sharma’s daughter.
