Government Announces LPG Price Hike: New Rates Effective April 8, 2025
Impact of LPG Price Increase

Updated: April 7, 2025 | By Digvijay Singh
In a significant decision that will influence countless households throughout India, the Government of India has declared a ₹50 rise in the cost of domestic LPG cylinders. This adjustment will take effect on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, as confirmed by Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
🆕 Revised Domestic LPG Pricing
New Price: ₹853 per cylinder
Previous Price: ₹803 per cylinder
Effective Date: April 8, 2025
This price adjustment follows a period of stability, with the last change in domestic LPG pricing occurring in August 2024.
📉 Financial Impact on Government
Minister Puri explained that the reduction in LPG prices under the Ujjwala Yojana has resulted in a substantial loss of ₹41,338 crore for the government. He pointed out that Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have been absorbing the increasing costs of LPG in the international market for an extended period.
With the rise in global LPG prices, the government has opted to increase domestic rates to mitigate these losses.
💸 Continued Subsidies for Ujjwala Scheme Beneficiaries
Despite the price increase, individuals benefiting from the PM Ujjwala Yojana will still receive subsidized LPG cylinders. Following the new pricing:
Ujjwala LPG Price: ₹553 per cylinder
This subsidy is designed to maintain affordability for economically disadvantaged households.
📈 Global Market Influences on Domestic Prices
The minister highlighted that LPG prices in the international market have been on the rise, necessitating this domestic price adjustment. Additionally, the government has announced a ₹2/litre increase in excise duty on petrol and diesel, reflecting similar trends observed globally.
