Preparations Underway for Ambubachi Mela

Guwahati, June 3: The state government has set aside Rs 4.55 crore to facilitate the upcoming Ambubachi Mela, which is scheduled from June 22 to 26 at the Kamakhya Temple.

Tourism Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass announced this funding on Tuesday, stating that preparations are in full swing to ensure a smooth experience for both pilgrims and visitors.

During a review meeting involving 24 departments, including key officials like the Kamrup Metro DC and the Director of Tourism, various logistical aspects were discussed, according to Dass.

He mentioned that another meeting will take place on June 9 at the Kamrup Metro DC's office and at the Kamakhya temple to assess the preparations on the ground.

Special provisions are being made for differently-abled visitors and those who may find it challenging to ascend the hill.

“As in previous years, we will ensure that alternative routes are available and accessible,” Dass stated. He also warned that certain roads susceptible to landslides might be closed to vehicles in case of adverse weather, although they will remain open for pedestrians.

Regarding COVID-19 measures, Dass noted that no specific guidelines have been issued by the government at this time.

“We cannot implement any measures unless there are official directives,” he explained.

The Minister encouraged visitors to refrain from bringing shoes and instead wear socks, assuring that carpeting and water facilities will be provided. “We request all attendees to cooperate and help preserve the sanctity of the shrine,” he added.

Emphasizing the cultural and spiritual importance of the Ambubachi Mela, Dass revealed that the event will now be referred to as the "Ambubachi Mahayog."

Senior priests supported this view, stating, “While it is commonly known as a mela, it is truly a Mahayog, a sacred time when planetary alignments create a period of profound spiritual energy and austerity.”

The previous year's Ambubachi Mela attracted nearly 700,000 visitors, including international tourists. With expectations for similar or even greater attendance this year, the government is preparing to ensure a safe and enriching experience.
