Gold Trader Duped in Kolkata: Fake Biscuits Worth Rs 33 Lakh

Incident Overview

Kolkata, Dec 3: A gold trader was deceived into accepting counterfeit gold biscuits in exchange for jewellery valued at Rs 33 lakh, as reported by local authorities on Wednesday.

Police investigations revealed that a deal was struck between a jewellery dealer from Hooghly district and a workshop in Ghola, located in North 24 Parganas, to swap gold biscuits for gold jewellery.

After receiving the biscuits, an employee from the Ghola workshop returned to the shop, only to discover that the biscuits were not genuine upon inspection.

Following the incident, the Hooghly dealer vanished, prompting the workshop owner to lodge a complaint at the Ghola police station, which was subsequently forwarded to the Posta Police Station for further action.

Authorities have initiated an investigation into the matter. The owner of the jewellery workshop resides in Nataghar, Ghola, and had made arrangements with a dealer from Hooghly for the exchange.

The agreement stipulated that the Ghola dealer would provide jewellery, while the Hooghly dealer would offer gold biscuits instead of cash.

It was communicated that the Hooghly dealer would not visit Ghola but would meet at Sonapatti in Kolkata.

The Ghola dealer dispatched approximately 259 grams of gold jewellery through an employee.

A senior police official stated, "The jewellery was handed over near a sweet shop in Sonapatti. The individual received jewellery worth Rs 33 lakh in a packet and provided two gold biscuits in return. They were difficult to distinguish from real ones, but testing revealed they were entirely fake."

In response to the complaint, police conducted a raid in Rishra, Hooghly district, searching for the accused dealer. Some jewellery was recovered from his residence, but the suspect remains at large. Police continue their efforts to apprehend the gold dealer.
