Immediate Action Following Goa Nightclub Fire

In the wake of the tragic fire incident at a nightclub in Goa, local authorities have taken decisive action. The renowned restaurant 'The Cape Goa', located in South Goa, has been sealed due to violations of fire safety and other regulations. Officials confirmed this development on Tuesday. An order issued on Monday revealed that while the tourism department had granted permission for a temporary structure, it was discovered that the establishment was operating a full restaurant outside the approved area.

The notice indicated that the ongoing operation of the premises without mandatory safety approvals poses a serious and imminent threat to human life and property, particularly in the event of a fire, short-circuit, structural disaster, or any emergency requiring evacuation. This enforcement action follows a devastating fire on December 6 at the 'Burch by Romeo Lane' nightclub in North Goa, which resulted in the loss of 25 lives.

Inspection Findings on December 12

Maya Pednekar, chairperson of the joint enforcement and monitoring committee for Canacona Taluka, ordered the sealing of 'The Cape Goa', situated on a cliff at Cabo de Rama Fort in South Goa. A team led by Pednekar conducted an inspection of the premises on December 12 and identified multiple violations at the popular restaurant. The notice associated with the sealing emphasized the 'danger to human life and property'.

Details of the Violations Discovered

During the inspection, the committee found that the restaurant was operating in blatant disregard of essential legal safety requirements. The order stated that the venue was overcrowded, with more than 24 individuals present; no approved structural plan or stability certificate was provided; the kitchen was deemed unsafe, lacking proper exits and posing a high risk of fire. Pednekar noted that there was no separate exit door for patrons to leave the restaurant, and crucial fire safety equipment was absent from the dining area, kitchen, staff pantry, storage room, bakery, and additional storage located beneath the restaurant.
