Goa Health Minister's Actions Spark Controversy Over Doctor's Suspension

Controversy Erupts Over Health Minister's Conduct
Following the suspension order of the chief medical officer at Goa Medical College and Hospital by Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced on Sunday that the senior doctor would not face any disciplinary action.
A video that circulated on social media showed Rane confronting Rudresh Kuttikar in a hospital ward, where he expressed dissatisfaction over a complaint regarding the alleged refusal of an injection to a patient.
Rane was heard stating, “I am suspending you,” emphasizing his authority in the matter.
On Sunday, Sawant confirmed he had assessed the situation at Goa Medical College and had discussions with Rane regarding the incident.
“I assure the people of Goa that Dr. Rudresh Kuttikar will not be suspended,” the chief minister stated. “Our government and dedicated medical professionals are committed to maintaining high healthcare standards for all citizens.”

The Goa branch of the Indian Medical Association condemned Rane's actions, labeling them as “unruly” and detrimental to the dignity of the medical profession.
They described Rane's behavior as “deeply regrettable and unacceptable,” asserting that it undermines the morale of the entire medical community.
The Congress party in Goa has called for Rane's removal, branding him as “corrupt, arrogant, and dangerously erratic.”
“This incident is not isolated,” they stated, highlighting a troubling trend of intimidation and arrogance. Rane must be held accountable for his treatment of healthcare professionals,” they added.

Later, Rane accepted responsibility for his communication style, promising that such behavior would not occur again.
“I acknowledge that my tone and words could have been more measured,” he remarked.
However, he defended his actions, stating, “I will not apologize for advocating for a patient who was denied care. Doctors are esteemed members of society, and while many at GMC serve with dedication, I must act when I see indifference replacing compassion.”
