Inauguration of Goa Chess Academy

In a significant effort to establish Goa as a leading chess hub in the nation, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant inaugurated the Goa Chess Academy on Thursday. This initiative, a collaboration between the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, the Sports Authority of Goa, and the Goa Chess Association, aims to enhance the state's sports infrastructure. During the event, the Chief Minister also introduced the official Goa Chess Jersey, emphasizing the government's commitment to promoting chess throughout the state.

Financial Recognition for Chess Excellence

To honor outstanding achievements in chess, Grandmaster Ethan Vaz received a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh. Additionally, the Goa Chess Association was granted Rs 20 lakh in government funding for the esteemed Manohar Parrikar Chess Tournament, bringing the total financial support announced during the event to Rs 25 lakh.

Vision for the Future of Chess in Goa

The Chief Minister expressed that the Goa Chess Academy is set to cultivate a strong network of elite coaches and players. Plans are underway to establish training centers in every taluka and to create a specialized academy in South Goa. Sawant highlighted that these initiatives are part of a broader vision to place Goa on the international chess stage, with aspirations to host and participate in major events like the FIDE World Cup. Furthermore, these efforts align with the Fit India Movement, promoting both physical fitness and mental prowess through chess.
